14th International JOTT – 2011-05-14

Well done to everyone from The 5th Dartford Scout group who represented us at the 14th Jambouree on the Trail, with young people from all sections taking part in the adventure. As usual, the starting point for the scouts, explorers and many parents, instructors and leaders was Sevenoaks Station.  The route followed the Darent Valley Path for the 17 miles back to Dartford Central Park, which for the most part, was in glorious sunshine. Along the way our number grew as we were joined by Cub scouts and Beaver scouts at distances more suited to little legs; However, it should be noted that some cubs did the full distance and some beavers completed the Cub course too.

The Earley Scout Troop were given the chance to submit any photos taken for a prize competition and we’ll report on the result of that once all the entries are in.

Many young people took up the challenge to raise group funds for 777 through sponsorship for their efforts and once the totals are in, we’ll report on that too.

Finaly, a big thanks to the District team for making this a well organised event, which everyone enjoyed.

Good luck raising the funds……

Earley Scout Jack raising funds for New Hall

Jack has been a member of the 5th Dartford Scout Group for over 6 years and is actively raising money for the New Hall Fund. On 3rd June this year, Jack will be taking part in the 150 mile Coast to Coast (C2C) cycle ride from Cumbria to Newcastle to raise much needed funds. Jack has already raised over £287 and there’s still 23 days to go.

Jack said…… “I am very grateful for any donations; Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to the 5th Dartford Hall fund. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity’s behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.  Yours in scouting, Jack Hannah”

Virgin Money Giving all set up

The Virgin money giving account & links have been set up & we’re already recieving donations from friends & supporters.  The new link on the right will direct donators to our money giving site for 777 – The New Hall fund, which allows them to make donations of any size & even cliams the gift aid for us too.

We Collect TESCO Vouchers too!

We’ve now registered the 5th Dartford Scout Group for the TESCO vouchers scheme which is similar to Active Kids run by Sainsbury’s, but the difference being there’s more craft type items in the TESCO catalogue, which would be very useful to the younger sections.  So could you please let your parents know we’re now collecting both when you return after the Easter break.

There will be a collecting box down the hall next to the Sainsburys one but it really doesn’t matter if they get mixed up as I will empty them each week and count them as we go along.

Many Thanks
Wendy

2011-04-08 – Update from Malcolm

We are now finishing week 4 of our conditioning training and I can feel that my general level of fitness has greatly improved. After the initial few weeks my hands have hardened and the blisters now all but gone. The rows have switched tempo from near hour long sessions to short sharp sprints of around 10 minutes. Although the monotony has gone the average time per 500 meters has dropped considerably meaning a faster pace and harder pulls. This is now compounded by the addition of sets. So each row has to be completed several times at the same pace. I have been adding extra training is to give a bit of variety, with a few steady runs and cycle training. I completed a 28 mile cycle today in 1 hour 20 minutes, giving an average speed of 21 mph. It is good to hear news of how the fundraising is going back home, as it gives me inspiration when digging deep to put the miles in during meal breaks and after work.

Regards Mal

2011-04-07 – Update from Alex

Just to let you know I’m now in week 6 and still getting on ok.  I have just recieved the T-Shirts and will try and get some photos out soon as I can get to a computer Ii can put external hardware into.  Feel a lot stronger and fitter now, although I’m very conscious that my running will have to be worked on at the end of the basic fitness phase.  Really we are using this to build us to a similar base level from which we can get stuck in to the rowing.  Very pleased that we have now got around £40,000 already and that is really good news.

Many Thanks
Alex

777 – 2011-03-26 – Update from Alex

“I have been getting on with the rowing and basic fitness programme that Mal and I put together and have so far managed to get all the sessions in. My main complaint would be blisters on my hands but hopefully now they have formed hard pads it should become a lot easier. The weather here is creeping up to 30 degrees and is pleasant unless you are out and about working at different locations.

Mal and I are now beginning the process of organising flights and working out key timings so that we keep on schedule. We are aiming to keep all runs below 5 hours.”
