2010-12-05 – Birthday Parade & Service

Members of all sections met at the hall at 10am prompt to parade the short distance to the Spital Street Methodist Church to celebrate and give thanks for the 94 years of scouting at the 5th Dartford Scout Group. As usual, the regular congregation were very welcoming and the Rev’d Tim Crome gave a thoroughly entertaining, interactive and thought provoking service and notably informal in his new Christmas jumper, which differed somewhat from the usual blue tunic to which we had become accustomed ;O)

During the service, we had readings from two scouts. The first; Phil Mason of the Earley Troop read from Psalm 72 – What sort of King?  The second reading came from Ben Hodges of the Burne Troop, who did an outstanding job having been substituted at the last minute. Ben’s reading was from Matthew 3: 1-6 – Let us all become monks! Following this second reading, Tim offered a challenge to all to take a short vow of silence, perhaps just 5 minutes to reflect and think about what’s really important.

We were suitably impressed when it was time for the Offertory, with our young members digging deeply and with enthusiasm to contribute and help towards the church’s running costs.

GSL Paul Boreham spoke of how the group has grown recently with the formation of new sections Edwards Beavers and Phillips Cubs and how new leaders have risen to the challenge and stepped up from assisting roles to lead the new sections.  In addition to giving thanks to the uniformed leaders of all sections, Paul took time to give thanks to the non uniformed helpers and instructors to whom the group is indebted, but none more so than Jim Lilleycrop who Paul publicly recognised with a small token of the group’s appreciation.

Once Paul had finished his address, Ted “Cougar” Essex announced to the congregation that both GSL Paul Boreham and AGSL Lyn Medcalfe had recently been awarded the Order of Merritt for their commitment to scouting, which they had modestly kept under their hats.  Congratulations to you both.

Once the formalities were over, the colours were paraded back to base and the celebrations began.  Read the other posts to see what we got up to……….

Many thanks to Tim, the congregation and the officers of the church for making us so welcome once again.

Christmas Raffle 2010

Many thanks for all that attended the raffle ticket selling on Saturday at Sainsburys at Crayford, an excellent turn out by the sections produced excellent results with all tickets being sold and over £700 being raised on the day.

Over 500,000 Scouts in UK – Join the Adventure

In the past 12 months, Scouting in the UK has experienced its largest growth in over 50 years.  This in part is no doubt due to the new exciting role model the asociation has found in new Chief Scout Bear Gryll’s, but locally the 5th Dartford Scout group has started two new sections because of the public demand to be part of Our Adventure.  It’s not too late to join us as a Beaver or Cub, but places are limited so please act quick.

2010-11-18 – Rawhide Beavers Climb our Wall

Tonight the “Rawhide” Beaver colony from Stone descended on 5th Dartford Scout Group’s HQ to experience our Wall under the tuition of our own highly trained instructor leaders, who donated their time, experience and our facilities for free. The young adventures undertook this challenge as part of thier sponsorship mission to raise funds for SOS (Support Our Soldiers.)

We understand that these Beavers have raised in excess of £260 in sponsorship and have been busy packing shoe-boxes with goodies to be shipped out to our troops. The 5th Dartford Scout Group fully support the efforts of the Stone “Rawhide” Beavers and wish them every success in this noble venture.

New Sections Are Go

The 5th Dartford Scout Group has now opened 2 new sections and at the time of publication there is availability for girls and boys in both Beavers (6-8) and Cubs (8-10 1/2).  Flyers like the one below are now being distributed to local schools and residences and we expect places to fill very quickly. For further information please either contact the section leaders directly or click on our contact / join forms.

2010-11-06 – District Beaver Science Day

The Science Department of Swan Valley School played host to 100 Beavers from the Dartford District which included 30 from the 5th Dartford. who all enjoyed an enthralling and fascinating morning doing variuos experiments in their laboratories.

The Science teachers encouraged all the Beavers to have a go at various experiments including Chromatography separating the mix of colours in inks, making a bang with a chemical reaction, constructing a bridge to withstand force and making an electric circuit using bulbs, wires and a battery.

All the Beavers earned their experiment badge but most of all had a great experience and a taster session for the wonders of science yet to come as they get older.

Very many thanks from the 5th Dartford Beavers to all the Science staff at Swan Valley and to the Stone Beaver Leaders who organised the event.

2010-10-28 – Half-Term Halloween

Philpott & Peacock Beavers joined forces for their annual Half-Term Halloween Party. A record 34 boys,6 Leaders & 3 young Leaders donned costumes of a spooky nature and joined in traditional Halloween games.

After trying to get do-nuts off a string using only their mouth, then apple bobbing and claiming Dracula’s fangs from a plate of flour, we all looked more messy than menacing but a good time was had by all.

Regards Wendy

2010-11-03 – Edwards Beavers Go Live

Tonight, the 5th Dartford Scout Group saw the mixed gender Edwards Beaver colony go live with 5 of the 7 new members and leaders Vicky and Kim at the helm.  GSL Paul was there to welcome the new members to the group on its inaugural session and initial feedback from new female Beaver Megan is that “It was great, we did some games and craft and I made the scout sign under the flag, but we didn’t do bulldog….”  Well Megan, we’re glad you had a great first session and at the 5th we can assure you of many years of great experiencies and we look forward to seeing your colony meeting together next week and growing to full capacity over the following weeks.

Poppy Appeal 2010

Many thanks to Dave for ensuring we have a Poppy appeal donation box and a plentiful supply of Poppies, located next to the badge box at the 5th Dartford Scouts Group hall.  Please feel free to give most generously and encourage our younger members too, so that our living veterans and their families can live with the dignity they have earned and those who have given their lives in service can be honoured and remembered.

Please don’t forget that wearing the poppy is a visible sign that a scout is respectful and fully understands what it symbolises.

This year, Rembrance Sunday falls on Sunday 14th November and all of our scouts, without exception, are expected to attend the service and parade in full and smart uniform.
