2010-11-06 – District Beaver Science Day

The Science Department of Swan Valley School played host to 100 Beavers from the Dartford District which included 30 from the 5th Dartford. who all enjoyed an enthralling and fascinating morning doing variuos experiments in their laboratories.

The Science teachers encouraged all the Beavers to have a go at various experiments including Chromatography separating the mix of colours in inks, making a bang with a chemical reaction, constructing a bridge to withstand force and making an electric circuit using bulbs, wires and a battery.

All the Beavers earned their experiment badge but most of all had a great experience and a taster session for the wonders of science yet to come as they get older.

Very many thanks from the 5th Dartford Beavers to all the Science staff at Swan Valley and to the Stone Beaver Leaders who organised the event.

2010-11-05 – Leigh Pack Fireworks

Leigh Pack celebrated Fireworks night with a ‘Bang’.  With a full pack of Cubs briefed on the safety of fireworks, we made our way outside.  The fireworks commenced with plenty of “ooohs” and “ahhs” coming loudly from the excellently behaved Leigh Pack Cubs.

When the flash and crackles came to an end, we returned into the hall, Hotdogs “with ketchup too” said one happy cub, a warm up in the hall and our bellys filled, we returned back outside to a nice hot camp fire where we sung camp fire songs – Chickens have legs with actions (Can you imagine!!!) and toasted marshmellows, yummy! Each Cub toasted their own marshmallows on the open fire and enjoyed watching them go gooey before eating them. John then produced yet another surprise of Sparklers…. Gloves at the ready we made a circle and we lit the sparklers.

Thank you to Brett for a great display of fireworks and to Jacqueline and Tina for cooking our hotdogs.

A fun night was had by all and no Cubs were injured in the making….

2010-11-04 – Goodbye Guy Fawkes

After a short discussion on who, when and what Guy Fawkes was, the Philpott Beavers made their own life size ‘Guy’ by stuffing old clothes with hundreds of sheets of newspaper and adding a Mr Blobby mask for the final touch. It was then taken outside and sat on an unlit fire.  Once the Beavers were settled on benches and at a safe distance, the fire was lit and they watched with delight as the Guy burnt and shrivelled away.  This was followed by camp fire songs to make the most of the mild evening.

Regards Aunty Beaver.

2010-11-03 – Edwards Beavers Go Live

Tonight, the 5th Dartford Scout Group saw the mixed gender Edwards Beaver colony go live with 5 of the 7 new members and leaders Vicky and Kim at the helm.  GSL Paul was there to welcome the new members to the group on its inaugural session and initial feedback from new female Beaver Megan is that “It was great, we did some games and craft and I made the scout sign under the flag, but we didn’t do bulldog….”  Well Megan, we’re glad you had a great first session and at the 5th we can assure you of many years of great experiencies and we look forward to seeing your colony meeting together next week and growing to full capacity over the following weeks.

2010-10-28 – Half-Term Halloween

Philpott & Peacock Beavers joined forces for their annual Half-Term Halloween Party. A record 34 boys,6 Leaders & 3 young Leaders donned costumes of a spooky nature and joined in traditional Halloween games.

After trying to get do-nuts off a string using only their mouth, then apple bobbing and claiming Dracula’s fangs from a plate of flour, we all looked more messy than menacing but a good time was had by all.
