2013-04-26 – Visitors from Gravelines

globalTonight, the Earley-troop had the opportunity to make a change to our scheduled programme to welcome our friends Alain Letreux, Natacha Sacrias, other leaders and the Scouts of the Fishermen of Iceland Scout Group, from Gravelines, France, who were staying at Scout House for the weekend. Our visitors joined in games, where both teams were of mixed nationality, with one team wearing our red scarves and another in the blue and whiteUntitled.  It was a great evening, which was rounded off with our overseas friends singing some of their songs and it certainly ticked some boxes for our Global Challenge too.  We look forward to seeing them when we visit Gravelines for our Summer Camp in July.frenchvisitors1 frenchvisitors2

2013-03-29 – Easter Camp

EasterWith a chill in the air more fitting to Winter Camp, 45 members of the 5th Dartford Scout Group ventured again to Thriftwood Scout Campsite in Brentwood for our annual Easter Camp.

Blessed with dry weather and a well stocked wood pile, all the facilities were there for the Scouts and Explorers to put into practice what they had learned over the years and for our prospective Patrol Leaders to accept responsibility and take charge of their patrols.

The theme was ‘Backwoods‘, with all meals being cooked by the Scouts, on an open fire, fueled by wood they cut, split and lit themselves.   Other activities included climbing, Tent-peg carving, archery, wide games and fishing, where the largest catch of the day was landed by linking Cub Scout Lauren on her Saturday visit with Harriet.

On this camp a great many lessons were learned by all, but by far the greatest realisation for the Scouts was just how difficult things can be without proper planning and teamwork, especially when the breakfast fairy hasn’t done it all before they wake up 😉

2013-03-09 – District X Country

cross countryIt was a fresh and muddy Saturday afternoon, but the rain held off for the annual Dartford District Cross Country race.  The 5th Dartford Scout group was well represented, although a few more faces would have been nice.  All the members who turned out for their race did very well and tried their best regardless of where in the field they came, with some remarking on how much they had improved on previous years.  And to our prize winners a very well done indeed and thank you to the leaders and family who were there to support our young folks adventure.

Below is a table of our achievements and some photo’s too.xc2013a

2013-02-07 – Silver Volunteer for Matt

Tonight, the Burne-Troop’s Matthew was presented with is Kent Scout’s Silver Volunteer Award.  Theses awards are worn on the bottom of the right shirt sleeve and in particular, the silver award recognizes Scouts within the County who have committed to volunteering in excess of 50 hours and Matthew is one of only 3 of the 5th’s Scouts to achieve this.  Well done Matthew, same again for the gold 😉

Any Scouts who have not yet started volunteering your time, please click here to see the requirements for the awards and to download the log sheet.

2013-02-24 – Dartford Masonic Craft Fair

masonsToday a fair number of our young members and leaders attended the Dartford Masonic Centre’s craft fair to assist with admissions and the lucky dip. As usual there were some fine vintage cars on display, crafts, gifts, chickens and eggs and welcome refreshments, which helped with the bitter chill. Always a worthwhile event for us to attend as we receive a share of the door towards our new hall fund and on this occasion, we recieved a cheque for £375.00!  Additionally, the attending young folk can also get credit towards their Community Challenge and Kent Scout Volunteer Award.
