2014-09-11 – Mayor’s Presentation

Paul our GSL met with Mayor Avtar Sandhu at the Civic Centre to collect the Mayor’s Cup awarded to ‘5th Dartford Scouts’ as the best charity module at this years Dartford Festival (19th & 20th July) where the fundraising team arranged Cross-Bows, Book & Puzzle sale, a one-pole bridge pioneering project where we raised funds for our new hall fund, the Dartford Japan Jamboree Scouts also joined us with the Mayor drawing the prize winners of their raffle.

A big thank you to all Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and Parents who represented 5th Dartford Scouts so well that we were awarded this prize. The large cup is now proudly on display in our trophy cabinet.CIMG1367

2014-07-20 – Hike & Cub Camp

CAMPOn Friday 20th July to Sunday 22nd July the annual cub camp for Fifth Dartford Scouts commenced. A group of scouts took part in a night hike to the campsite on the Friday night. This involved scouts and some helpful explorers acting as young leaders to take leadership roles within the group and allowed them to practice their map reading skills. The scouts, explorers, parents and leaders hiked for 6 miles and arrived at camp at around 11:30pm. Although some parts were challenging, particularly the navigation and map reading, all found the hike very enjoyable. The next morning the scouts left and the cubs arrived. Many activities were laid on for the cubs on the Saturday including backwards cooking, go karting and survival bracelet making. In the backwards cooking exercise the children made boiled eggs in oranges and melted chocolate in bananas as well as frankfurter sausages in spaghetti and other original dishes. After backwards cooking the cubs we’re given time to play their independent games of football on the field. Then after lunch some of the cubs made survival bracelets whilst others took turns to slide down the make-shift waterside making the most of the hot, sunny weather. In the evening the cubs attended mass and then returned to the camp to tuck into a bbq. After all the burgers had been eaten and the cubs plastic plates and cutlery we’re clean some wide games of manhunt we’re organised by the young leaders. Shortly after the cubs we’re sent to bed read for their next busy day of activities. On the Sunday morning after breakfast the cubs took part in two trails set up by the leaders. This required teamwork and using all their senses. Eventually the time came to pack up the tents and find the owners of lost property before the parents came to pick the cubs up.

Overall cub camp 2014 was a very successful weekend and a big thanks goes out to everyone who made that possible, particularly Delia Davidson who was in charge of running the weekend and achieved her night’s away permit.

JOTT_201417th Jamboree On The Trail

On Saturday 10th May 2014 despite the weather forecast hundreds of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Network and Leaders walked from various start points along the Darent Valley Path for the 17th International Jamboree On The Trail all ending up at Sutton-at-Hone Football Ground.

5th Dartford were well represented by all age groups and although a few showers en-route gave us a bit of a soaking spirits were high and a good time had by all.

At 4pm as we all crossed the finish line we were well catered for with drinks and snacks and big smiles when all participants were presented with their badges.

Thank you especially to all the family members who took part for the very first time. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!


Climbing Wall Staircase Donated

Many of you will by now have heard about or seen in the Gravesend Reporter, that Mr Adam Clarke of AKD Contracts, has donated a complete steel staircase, worth @ £25,000 to provide safe and permanent access to our climbing wall. Preparations for the slab, upon which the staircase will sit, have begun and we should expect the project to complete in just a few weeks time, so you’ll all be able to see it and put it to good use at our AGM on 8th June.  AKD Contracts

2014-03-01/2 – Sainsburys Bag Packing

sainsburysOn the weekend of March 1st and 2nd, the 5th Dartford Scout Group, as Sainsbury Crayford’s Local Charity of The Year, had the opportunity to pack bags for their customers once again to raise further funds.  Thanks to all the leaders and young folk who turned out as your efforts earned us in excess of £1,200.00, so a very well done to you all. Whilst there, two of the Earley-Troop Scouts were photographed with 2012 Paralympian tennis ace, Marc McCarroll and Sainsbury staff, who were promoting Sainsbury’s involvement with Sport Relief.Sainsburys

2014-03-08 – District Cross Country

cross countryOn a gloriously dry and sunny day we were well represented at this annual district event, with members from 7 of our 9 sections. For our younger members, the traditional cross country races were run, with Peacock Colony taking 1st place in the individual 6yr olds and 1st in the 7yr overall.  Philpott Colony won the 6yr old overall and took 1st in the individual race for the 7yr olds.

Phillips and Collins cub packs were represented, with Collins pack taking the individual 3rd in the 10yr old race.

For the Scouts, there was an additional element; the ToughEnough assault course, which comprised of various obstacles designed to challenge the Scouts. The Earley Troop won 10 1/2-12yr olds overall event and 3rd place individual and the Burne Troop won the 12-14yr olds overall and took 1st, 2nd & 3rd as individuals.

Well done to everyone who competed or came to support the young folk, but a special well done to all of our winners.
