Winter Camp 2013 – Gilwell Park

wintercamp_headerWere you one of the 43 5th Dartford Scouts and Explorers attending WinterCamp2013? If not, this is just some of what you missed!

The forward party of leaders arrived on the Friday to set up camp and our preferred pitch was agreed in record time thanks to experienced service crew.  Within just a few hours we were ready to receive our young adventurers, who arrived between 7 & 9 the same evening.  With the usual exploration of the site, hotdogs and hot chocolate they were all off to ‘The Lid’ for the Friday rave to blow off steam before the following day’s full on activities.

Saturday began a tad earlier than hoped with some of our members unable to enjoy the lie-in, but nonetheless with a good breakfast inside them they were all off to enjoy the programme, which amongst other activities, included horse riding, Kayaking and White-water rafting on the newly built Olympic course at Lea Valley.    Once the day’s activities concluded and a fine meal was was enjoyed by all, there was a choice of 5 films to watch before a recall for cake and hot chocolate and yet another rave.

Funnily enough, the young folk were less enthusiastic about getting up on Sunday as they were on Saturday, but that was nothing a ladle and frying-pan couldn’t remedy 😉

Activities on Sunday resumed at 10 for a couple of hours whilst leaders broke camp and loaded the van.  Thanks to everyone who returned to the hall to unpack and stow the dry kit and hang up to dry all the wet tents.
