5th Dartford Scout Groups 96th Birthday Celebrations

At 10:15 on Sunday 2nd December, a grand parade of over 120 members from all sections of the 5th Dartford Scout group walked down West Hill in an orderly fashion bearing their sections colours, to be greeted at the Methodist Church by a very warm welcome. Banners and balloons decorated the church and we even had Stevie Wonder singing Happy Birthday to us (via C.D.)

Nathan and George of the Burne Troop did and excellent job with the Bible Reading as did Christopher and Harry of the Earley Troop with the prayers. Well Done to you all.

Our G.S.L. presented various Leaders with long service awards and George McCarron with the Masons Scout of the year trophy for his accomplishments and achievements throughout the year.

After much appreciated refreshments upstairs, the GSL thanked all church members for their hospitality and we made our way back to the hall. After dismissal the Scouts and Explorers left for their adventurous afternoon at Cyclopark and the Beavers and Cubs stayed at the hall for an afternoon of fun.

Beavers/Cubs Party:

Whilst the Leaders prepared a lovely buffet lunch the 58 Beavers and Cubs played games including trying to get Dough-nuts/Party ring biscuits off a string and wrapping one poor ‘volunteer’ from each team in toilet rolls to look like a ‘mummy’.

After lunch they were entertained for an hour by Terry Herbert a very good Magician and Ventriloquist who kept them all enthralled and in their seats (What a feat!). The Leaders quite enjoyed it too! with some totally amazing tricks.

Next came cakes and fizzy pop and then a calming game before being collected by their parents at 3pm.

Thanks to all the Leaders who worked tirelessly as a team to make the whole day go so well.

Scouts/Explorers Activity:

Arriving at Cyclopark for 13:45, we split the attending members in to 4 groups for Road Cycling, MTB, BMX and Scooter Park, with all bikes and equipment supplied along with expert tuition.  The first activity started @ 2pm with a rotation after an hour or so, which enabled every attendee to have a go at each event.  The activity was a far greater success than we could have predicted, with the clear winner being the BMX race track and many Scouts and Explorers alike buzzing with excitement and enquiring about club membership and future days out.  Despite our limited and/or outdated experience with these activities, we got through the adventure unscathed bar a couple of grazed knees, but the buzz of excitement was still going long after we departed at 18:30.
