Hiking can be an excellent activity for Scouts of all ages, not only from a physical fitness aspect but also to encourage them to develop the skills of planning, teamwork and leadership when preparing for and undertaking a hike or expedition.
Hiking can also be a means to an end, for example, hiking to a campsite, to a National Trust property, or to a place of interest. The Scouts fact-sheet on hiking can be found here.
The first opportunity for most young folk to Hike as a Beaver or Cub is on JOTT (Jamboree On The Trail), which is a staged hike which takes place on the 2nd Saturday in May each year. JOTT is an event, in which Scouts all over the world participate at the same time and parents are welcome to join in with us too.
There is also a Staged Activity Award for Hiking, which is awarded at 1, 5, 10, 20, 35 & 50 hikes and is carried forward as young folk move on through different sections.
