{"id":5547,"date":"2012-06-25T23:00:21","date_gmt":"2012-06-25T22:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.5thdartfordscouts.org.uk\/?p=5547"},"modified":"2012-06-25T23:19:52","modified_gmt":"2012-06-25T22:19:52","slug":"2012-06-23-leigh-pack-tredegar-allotments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.5thdartfordscouts.org.uk\/?p=5547","title":{"rendered":"2012-06-23 &#8211; Leigh Pack @ Tredegar Allotments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.5thdartfordscouts.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/cubs4.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1066\" title=\"cubs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.5thdartfordscouts.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/cubs4.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a>Last Saturday a small group of boys from the 5th Dartford Scout Group&#8217;s Leigh Pack took a short walk from the Scout Hut to visit the Tredegar Allotments and the Dartford Bee-Keepers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first part of the visit was a guided tour of the allotments including a talk on the wildlife of the area.\u00a0 The talk was illustrated with photographs all taken on site and the personal experiences of the guides.\u00a0 The boys were then led to a Discovery Table where there were a number of natural objects for them to investigate and identify. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.5thdartfordscouts.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Allotment2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5557\" title=\"Allotment2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.5thdartfordscouts.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Allotment2-150x150.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"111\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>They then discovered the herb garden and the strawberry patch before being invited to dig up some potatoes.\u00a0 These were placed in a plastic colecting bucket and the plant remains were put on the compost heap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The boys then took a break in the picnic area for lunch under the glorious clear blue sky.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second part of the trip was to meet with the Dartford Bee-Keepers.\u00a0 Here the boys were given a brief history lesson of bee-keeping before being shown honeycomb and learning about bee colony structures and how bees communicate through dance. They also learned\u00a0what causes bees to swarm and why swarming bees are less likely to sting.\u00a0 The boys were then dressed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.5thdartfordscouts.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/bees-drone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5553 alignleft\" title=\"bees-drone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.5thdartfordscouts.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/bees-drone-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"102\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a>in white bee-keeper overalls with in-built face\u00a0meshes before being led to the active hives.\u00a0 Here they not only watched the experts handing frames of bees but they also helped\u00a0in moving a hive box.\u00a0 This required many of the boys to actually\u00a0hold the frames that were completely covered in bees whilst the hive was re-arranged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By the end of the visit the boys had learned a lot about their natural environment and the importance of\u00a0plants and wildlife.\u00a0 The visit had provided them with a vast amount of information and had allowed them to learn in a fun environment.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Saturday a small group of boys from the 5th Dartford Scout Group&#8217;s Leigh Pack took a short walk from the Scout Hut to visit the Tredegar Allotments and the Dartford Bee-Keepers.
