Earley Troop Easter Camp – Downe 2009

Well we didn’t have the weather with us, but the spirits of the Earley Troop were not dampened at all as much fun was had by all at this “Back to Basics” Easter Camp.  Sure there was mud, rain and wet socks aplenty, but we were in excellent company and took the valuable oppertunity to revisit some of the fundamental skills of scouting, which could be often overlooked when we have so much excitement at our own facility.
Axe & saw and fire-lighting were favourites and were put to excellent use as the two camp patrols (QH & GD – Can you work out why they were so called?,) headed up by Rory and Tom (who now leave us as they join the Johnson Explorers,) cooked their own evening meals.  The first nights fair was a traditional fry-up.  However, the second night really pushed the boundaries as each patrol, with nothing more than a box of simple ingredients, instruction from camp leader and AGLS Paul Boreham and the embers of their own fires, turned 2 humble raw chickens in to well seasoned, succulent roast birds fit for anyone’s table; and accompanied by a good selection of vegetables too.

There was still plenty of time for play though with rope swings and orienteering filling the gaps between a good 6 mile hike through Downe village, High Wire and zip line.
